Keywords and subject headings

A keyword search in the Catalogue will find everything in the library on a topic. A subject heading search will get a shorter but more focussed list. If a search for Pacific gets too many irrelevant results (such as Asia-Pacific), use a more specific term such as Pacific Islands, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia or the name of a country.

Keyword searches

Keywords can be topics or names of organisations

Subject headings

These are standard terms for particular topics or subject matter you can use to search the Catalogue.
To locate items tagged with a subject heading:

  • Try a keyword search and look at the Details of a relevant item. To view other items with similar subject matter, click on any terms listed as Subjects.
  • If you know a specific subject heading for a topic, use an Advanced Search for the exact phrase in the subject field.
