Suggestions - Library and Information Commons

November, 2017

Could we please get a desktop shortcut to the actual location of the Home Drive? Currently theres the shortcut for mapping the home drive so that we can access it after we log in, but then we also have to then navigate to Computer -- Home Drive -- (and in my case) My Documents and potentially further depending on how students organise their folders. Since were already having to take extra clicks to even connect our Home Drive to the PC we are using, Id appreciate it if we could have a shortcut on the Desktop to reduce the number of unnecessary clicks. I know it doesnt seem like much but when Im logging on to several uni PCs a day over weeks and weeks the process gets really repetitive. It would be a nice little Quality of Life adjustment after the inconvenient new setup. Thanks!

    Hi Cahan
Firstly, thank you for getting in touch with us. Unfortunately not. It does seem like a tedious process to go through but unfortunately ITS latest re imagining of all the computers does not allow for anything to be saved or moved to the desktop.

I will pass on your concerns to Information Commons management to see if anything can be changed for 2018.

Kind Regards,
Ahmed

I have noticed that there are no signs inside IC4 work space regarding talking and leaving their belongings to save their seats while having lunch and dinner etc. Could you possibly put up couple of sings inside those areas?

    Hi Nate,

We are sorry to hear about your experience and hope that it was not too much of an inconvenience. We currently have in place an hourly check of the level that involves checking desks that are left empty. I will pass on your suggestion to the team to try and be more vigilant to ensure all students have a chance to utilise our facilities.

Kind Regards,
Ahmed

Hi, Ive noticed that noise is increasing during the exam period with people, for some odd reason, choosing the general library to study in groups and have a chat. This is extremely frustrating and I dont understand why nothing it being done about it. Are the security guards checking the floors during exam period? Because I havent seen any in the past two days that Ive been here- why is this? They should be here checking each floor every hour so they can tell people to be quiet.

I have forwarded your feedback to the manager of the Library Security team. I have been advised the library guards are required to make regular checks of each floor.

Banners highlighting the library is a quiet area are on order and should will be installed this week - we had hoped to receive them before now. We are aware that during the exam period people want to focus on their exam preparation.

Hi there. A good amount of the plugs in IC level 0 arent working. It would be great if they could be fixed. Thank you!

    IC Plugs
    Hi Em,

We do apologies for the inconvenience. We are currently aware of the issue, and we are aiming to have them all fixed for summer school. Unfortunately because it would require a significant effort to fix the wiring it would be best to do it during the break as currently it would disturb students.

Kind Regards,
Ahmed,

The most common time for people leaving their belongings on IC4 without any consequence is in the morning around 10 am. People leave it for their friends so they can get a spot. This very unfair.

    Roving
    Hi Kevin,

We have asked for roving to be increased over the exam period. Yesterday, roves were carried about nearly once an hour. Any more than this, and students find it too disruptive.
There is a 15 minute leeway, to allow people to pop out quickly to use the facilities, get a snack or answer a phone call.
If students believe that someone is saving a desk space, they should ask the staff at the Level 2 Helpdesk for assistance.

Kind Regards,
Ahmed
