Suggestions - Library and Information Commons

November, 2011

Logging off workstations in the General Library ----------------------------------------------------- To do this, as I understand it, one clicks on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the workstation screen. A window then pops up. Part of this is a small icon (drop-down window?). The contents of this small icon may be set - to log off or to shut down or restart or sleep etc. Until about 6 weeks ago the contents defaulted to log off. Now it defaults to shut down. Many people, myself included, making a point of logging-off and in a hurry, click the icon without reading it, out of habit. Consequently the next user has to reboot the workstation. Can this feature revert to what it was in the General Library so it conforms to Information Commons usage?

    PC Logoff
The Logoff menu option will be changed to be the same as the Information commons PCs with the next image update. This will occur before the start of next semester. The current menu is the default Windows 7 standard and has not been changed since we introduced Windows 7 to the General Library at the start of this year.
As you have pointed out, the current configuration causes confusion for some students and results in the PC sometimes being shutdown instead of logged off.

Hello, I would like to know why the Epsom library operates on Summer hours before the semester has finished? Especially since we still have assignments due!! It doesnt seem fair to lock us out of the library until 9am and operate on holiday hours when students still have important work to do. Thanks

    Epsom summer hours
    Hi Alex
I am sorry you were inconvenienced by our change over to summers hours. The changeover always happens at the end of exams because the level of patronage drops significantly after this time. In the past we have also closed on weekends after the exams, but we have extended weekend opening until the first week of December this year. This is a trial to see how well patronised the Library is by students who are still on campus. If you need to use a computer before 9am you are able to go to the Academic Success Centre in N Block. The Centre is open from 8am and you have access to computing and printing from there.

Each time I use a PC in the Architecture Library, something called the GFI Languard Installation Wizard starts. Is this a bug or a feature?
    Paul Litterick
    GFI Languard
The Library uses this application for keeping student PCs up to date with security patches. This message was displayed due a configuration error. This has now been fixed.

Thanks.
