Writing in English workshops

Our Writing in English workshops are designed to help you gain control over challenging aspects of English so that you can write more accurately and communicate more clearly with your reader. Learning Advisers will meet with you on campus or via Zoom and give you the opportunity to practice what you are learning, answer your questions and highlight other language resources.

Workshops available

  • Using the article system
    Learn how to make decisions in the correct use of the definite (the), indefinite (a/an) and zero articles.
  • Using active and passive voice
    Receive guidance and practice in using voice accurately and strategically in academic writing.
  • Using verb tenses
    Get advice about the use of tenses, particularly in regard to citation styles and tense choices.
  • Creating complex sentence structures
    Learn the techniques for expanding simple English sentences into more complex structures.
  • Editing your work
    Become familiar with how sentences can be polished by avoiding errors in syntax, grammar and mechanics.
  • Using punctuation effectively
    Learn about the punctuation system in English and how to correct common punctuation errors in academic writing.
  • Report writing in English
    Learn how to structure a scientific or engineering report and find out what you need to consider when writing.
