The Virtual Private Network (VPN) service is available to all staff, postgraduate students and authorised contractors. If your computer is not connected to the University network, but you want to access certain resources, you may need to establish a VPN connection, you may also need VPN when accessing University internal resources not publicly accessible through the internet.

The software application client you need installed is called FortiClient VPN. Detailed guidance and instructions on how to install and use FortiClient can be obtained from the following links:

Microsoft Office 365 can be downloaded and installed on your personal devices from the Microsoft portal. More information is available on our IT essentials page.


FlexIT is an online service that gives students access to software applications from any device at any time. As long as you have a computer or supported device that has an internet connection, you will be able to access FlexIT. If you are a staff member you can request access through this form: Request Access to FlexIT


Canvas is your key online learning tool for course materials and collaboration with other people in your course. The Canvas student guide provides a great introduction to the tool.


  • You can download the Canvas Student app on to your mobile phone via Google Play Services or the Apple app store (not all Canvas features are available on the mobile app). Alternatively, you can access Canvas through your phone’s web browser, to check for notifications, listen to lecture recordings, and much more.
  • Canvas has a built in Help (?) button that you can click on to view a range of Help options, including guides, live chat, and the Canvas Support Hotline 0800 005 205.
  • Canvas outages are very rare but can happen. You can monitor these on the system’s status page where the provider keeps us updated.
