  • European Bioinformatics Institute - Databases and Tools for protein and nucleotide sequences. Useful if BLAST doesn't have an answer
  • National Library of Medicine [US] includes
  • OMIM Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man. Use this to find information about a genetic condition / disease.
  • Pathway Interaction Database 'known biomolecular interactions and key cellular processes assembled into signaling pathways' from the US National Cancer Institute and Nature Publishing Group
  • PubChem 'information on the biological activities of small molecules' in 3 linked databases PubChem Substance, PubChem Compound, PubChem BioAssay. Includes structures. See also PubChemSR
  • Toxnet [US NLM] 'Databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases'. Includes ChemIDplus and Lactmed


  • Health on the Net: HON Run searches through websites that have a HON recommendation
  • Mednar 'Deep web medical search'. Click on Advanced search to see and select resources
  • Science.gov US government science information. Categories to search include Health & Medicine, plus biotechnology and genetics. The database can also be searched as part of WorldWideScience which includes Indian Medlars and PubMed Central. These databases are from Deep Web Technologies.

Citation and Impact Factors

  • Citation Impact Center from Thomson Reuters. Blog and comments, including the H index
  • eigenfactor.org uses the same citation data as Journal Citation Reports.
  • Harzog.com for Publish or Perish software and white papers on citation analysis, the h-index and the g-index
  • SCImago Journal & Country Rank uses citation data from Scopus. Functionality is similar to the Journal Citation Reports and has lists of ranked journals by subject.

  • Behind the headlines from the NHS. Health in the UK media but many of these find their way into New Zealand news sources. The usefulness of this site is that there is analysis of the articles including 'What kind of scientific study', What did the doctors do, What were the results of the study.
  • McMasterPLUS from McMaster University’s Health Information Research Unit has a number of alert services across topics eg obesity, public health, nursing, rehab, rating evidence based articles for relevance and newsworthiness. You need to register.

  • Cochrane Library Systematic reviews, clinical trials, abstracts of reviews of effectiveness. The Systematic Reviews are full text and are 'recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based health care'
  • BMJ BestTreatments 'reliable evidence-based health information for consumers'

  • BestBets for Emergency Medicine.
  • Clinical Knowledge Summaries From the UK NHS - 'reliable source of evidence-based information and practical 'know how' about the common conditions managed in primary care'. Free but registration is required.
  • EvidenceUpdates from the BMJ Evidence Centre. Citations from 150 clinical journals, including Cochrane Library quarterly updates, pre-rated for quality and clinical relevancy. Free but registration is required. Works as both an alerting service and as a searchable resource. See McMasterPLUS from McMaster University’s Health Information Research Unit for additional alert services across topics, rating evidence based articles for relevance and newsworthiness.
  • NHS Evidence The search box provides access to a range of information types, including primary research literature, practical implementation tools, guidelines and policy documents. Some of the information and some of the site is locked down for NHS staff access only (asks for an Athens password).
  • OTSeeker Australian database of abstracts and quality ratings of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews relevant to occupational therapy.
  • PEDro An evidence based web resource for physiotherapists.
  • speechBITE - 'open access to a catalogue of Best Interventions and Treatment Efficacy across the scope of Speech Pathology practice'. An evidence based practice initiative from the University of Sydney and Speech Pathology Australia.
  • SUMsearch Runs searches across a number of resources including PubMed. Checks your search strategy. Has focus options. Looks primarily for evidence based results.
  • TRIP Database  (Turning Research into Practice) - systematic reviews, CATs, journal clubs, clinical guidelines, medical images etc. See also TRIPAnswers
  • UpToDate for Patients - publicly available version with information for patients and families.

  • U.S. Preventive Services Task Force from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [US]. 'An independent panel of experts in primary care and prevention that systematically reviews the evidence of effectiveness and develops recommendations for clinical preventive services'...'including screening tests, counseling, immunizations, and preventive medications'.
  • NeLI: National Electronic Library of Infection [UK]
  • CAMline 'evidence-based website on complementary and alternative medicine' from Canada

  • Healthtalkonline UK site of 'people's experiences of health and illness'. The information is based on qualitative research from Oxford University on patient's experience. The site includes videos and sound scripts and covers a wide range of topics.
  • RealTimeHealth Videos of 'patient and carer stories on a range of conditions. These first-hand accounts cover the day to day challenges others have faced, and give insights into the coping strategies they have used'. Some of the content is available for free, some requires membership (your name, email address, and password – no money involved).
