Tātou te hunga ora. Tenā tātou katoa. Kia ora. This guide is intended to be an introductory resource into researching Māori genealogy. For new researchers in this area you are encouraged to read Charles Te Ahukaramu Royal's book Te Haurapa: an introduction to researching tribal histories and traditions. 1992. [NZ & P 929.10995 R88], and to read the introduction to Ross Himona's website "Māori Whakapapa". These both sound a note of caution. Traditionally, Māori genealogy has been handed down through the generations orally, and to chosen members of the whanau. Some of this valuable information has entered the public domain in the form of manuscripts and publications. It is always wise, where possible, to verify the printed version with a knowledgeable member of the family. We have arranged this guide according to tribal area. An iwi map following the contents table below may be of assistance if you do not know which iwi is relevant to your research. We have included works that contain whakapapa, and have excluded works which do not make explicit references to family lineages. For Auckland users, the Auckland Central City Library has a family history centre, and a Māori information service where further resources such as electoral rolls and shipping lists can be found. They also have copies of the Māori Land Court Minute Books. They are located on Floor 2 of the Central City Library, corner of Wellesley Street and Lorne Street, Auckland City. When researching whakapapa, it may also be useful to look for local histories of the area that the family lived in. For instance, 100 years of Waiapu by Charles Rau [NZP 995.17 R23] contains many references to places, events and characters of the Waiapu district, but no genealogical tables so it falls outside the scope of this guide.
