Overview and research strategies

  • Company information can be sourced from a variety of places.
  • Depending on the type of information required, it may be necessary to look in a number of resources - this will take time to do
  • Confidentiality or commercial sensitivity will be the most likely reasons for some information not being available.
  • For small and most unlisted companies in New Zealand information is very limited, particularly financial information.
  • It may be useful to do a GUIDED KEYWORD search on Voyager to find company information in books or chapters in books. A SUBJECT HEADING search using the heading business enterprises new zealand may also be useful.
  • Additional resources to check include databases which index journals. You can often piece together information about a company by analysing information from journal and newspaper articles
  • The guide on Competitive intelligence may be useful for learning about and applying some of the research strategies outlined in the linked resources
  • The guide on New Zealand industry information may be useful as many of the resources include specific company information eg the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise website and the Commerce Commission particularly the Public Registers section which includes company's submissions and Commission decisions.
  • For electricity companies see the guide on Energy.
  • If you need clarification about the way companies startup see the BIZ : Business Information Zone website, the resources listed for Doing business in New Zealand, and information on the New Zealand Companies Act 1993
  • For additional legal information regarding companies see the guide on New Zealand legal resources for business students
  • A google search can be useful
  • See also a flow chart - Finding New Zealand Company Information
  • You may not always be able to find the exact information you require and you may not find an instant answer - you may have to state in an assignment that you could not find the exact information, or you may have to surmise by analysing the information gaps.
