Essay Assignment

An optional one hour tutorial is being offered for all 321 students specifically to help with the Essay Assignment.  The tutorial will show you how to carry out a literature search the easy way using a variety of literature sources.  

  • The essay assignment requires you to conduct research using Library databases, electronic journals, print journals, electronic books and print books to find peer reviewed literature relevant to your essay topic - this is called a Literature Search.  [Primary, Review and Popular Journals, what are the differences?]
  • The tutorial will show you how to search the databases Review of Plant Pathology and Scopus and use electronic journals. Please choose your essay topic so that you have something to work with during the tutorial.

Before attending a tutorial you should:

  • Sign up for the time that suits you best, times and sign-up procedures below.
  • Be familiar with the content on this Course Resources page, you only need to spend five minutes quickly scrolling through what is available.

Use our on-line booking form to sign up for one of the three tutorial times (maximum of 20 people per session), select your preferred time from the drop down list and click on Book this Session.

  • APSNet
    An online resource for plant health information web site produced by the American Phytopathological Society (APS).  APS is an international scientific organization devoted to the study of plant diseases and their control.
  • The Plant Pathology Internet Guide Book
    A subject oriented internet resource guide for plant pathology, applied entomology, and all related fields. Contains many links to plant pathology related web sites organised by subject, information on integrated pest management (IPM), databases, journals, glossaries etc. Well organised and comprehensive.
  • Plant Viruses Online
    Contains information on most species of virus known to infect plants, not only those whose virions have been described, but also those like umbraviruses that have no virion protein genes of their own, and use the virion proteins of their symbiotic helper viruses instead. Includes data on host range; transmission and control; geographical distribution; physical, chemical and genomic properties; taxonomy and relationships; and selected literature references.
  • PLANTS
    PLANTS is a database which provides a single source of general information about the plant kingdom to researchers and other people interested in plants. PLANTS provides standardized plant names, symbols and other plant attribute information.
