Finding Sound Recordings
  • Most recordings or Maori and Pacific music at the University of Auckland are held in the Archive of Maori and Pacific Music and not listed on Voyager.
  • Search Voyager and Te Puna for cassettes and CDs. Under 'Choose Limits' select 'Musical Recording'. You can also add the phrases sound recording OR sound disc (used for both vinyl records and CDs) OR sound cassette to a keyword search. You can also limit to 'Videos/DVDs' or search with the keyword videorecording. Note that many sound recordings are not of music.

Finding Journal Articles

Databases

New Zealand

The following sources index articles in local journals and newspapers. For articles that are not full text do a SERIAL TITLE search on Voyager for the name of the newspaper, magazine or journal.

  • Index New Zealand (INNZ) From 1987 on.
Indexes New Zealand and Pacific journals, magazines and some newspaper articles (1987-). For 1941-1986 see Index to New Zealand periodicals
  • Newztext Plus
Full-text of NZ newspapers, Radio NZ wires and industry and magazines. From 1993 (business magazines), 1999 (NZ Herald), 1995/6 (other NZ newspapers owned by Fairfax Group) and Radio NZ (1999-). Also includes Newzindex which provides indexing only records to a wider range of newspapers and magazines back to 1985 (no full text). The various sources can be searched separately or together.
  • Hawaii Pacific Index
From the University of Hawaii at Manoa, indexes a number of important Pacific magazines not indexed elsewhere (Matangi Tonga, Islands Business, Pacific Islands Monthly). Indexes the JPS back to 1892. However, has no subject headings.
  • Pacific Islands Report
Pacific Islands Development Program/East-West Center and Center for Pacific Islands Studies/University of Hawai'i. Includes an archive of news stories back to 1997.

Music

Use these to look for articles in overseas music magazines, newsletters and journals.

  • MUSE
Includes records for books and conference proceedings as well as journal articles (1960- ). Muse can only be used in the Library.
  • International Index to Music Periodicals
Includes a number of ethnomusicology journals. (1874-, Abstracts from 1996).

International

These databases cover some New Zealand journals but are mainly useful for articles about New Zealand and the Pacific published in other countries.

  • Anthropology Plus
A key index, Anthropology Plus indexes journal articles and edited books in anthropology and archaeology (19th century-). It has more than 800,000 records and uses modified Library of Congress (LC) subject headings (but has no abstracts).
  • JSTOR
Includes the full text of all except the recent volumes, of 22 anthropology journals and 43 sociology journals, back to their first issues. Does not include volumes from the last 5 years or so. JSTOR pages are also indexed by Google Scholar. See also select list of Anthropology titles in JSTOR.
  • Expanded Academic
Multidisciplinary fulltext and indexing database of academic journals, magazines and newspapers (indexing from 1989- and full text 1992-). Includes several important anthropology journals but leaves out other key journals. Example Advanced Search (ab (music* or danc*)) And (ab (oceania or polynesia* or tahiti* or hawaii* or tonga* or samoa*))
  • EBSCO Academic Search Premier
A set of databases from EBSCO Publishing - mostly full-text periodical collections, with an emphasis on peer-reviewed journals.
  • MLA Bibliography
Indexes material on linguistics, languages, literature and folklore from 1961 on.
  • ProQuest 5000
Another large collection of full-text material including a number of core anthropology journals. Indexing from the 1980s and fulltext mostly from the 1990s. Includes Ethnomusicology full-text from 1998 and Rolling Stone full-text from 1988.
  • Sociological Abstracts
Indexes over 2,600 journals plus conference papers, books, dissertations, and web sites (1963-). Includes coverage of Social Science journals including many Anthropology journals. There is some coverage of ethnomusicology.
  • Web of Science
A multidisciplinary database including the Social Sciences Citation Index (1956-). You may search for journal items by the references that they cite (including books or chapters in books). This type of searching often locates relevant articles that cannot be retrieved through traditional subject/author searching. An important tool for tracing the published responses of scientists & scholars to the work of their peers.

Subject Heading Searching

  • Subject headings are standardised terms or terminology that represent the major content of a particular work and can help increase the relevancy of your search results. Search for specific subject headings, or search for keywords in the Subject Heading field. Voyager, Te Puna, and Anthropology Plus use Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • A complete list of Library of Congress Subject Headings is available in the General Library.
  • Selected Library of Congress Subject Headings are listed below. Many have geographical subheadings (ie. names of countries, regions, towns or ethnic groups).
    • General terms for the Pacific
Oceania, Islands of the Pacific, Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, Pacific Islanders, Polynesians, Melanesians, Micronesians
    • Countries:
New Zealand, Samoan Islands, Western Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Fiji,  Hawaii, Society Islands, Tahiti, Marquesas Islands, etc.
    • Peoples:

    • You can also search for the names of performers and groups
