In May of 2001 the University of Auckland Library was the first university library to establish a dedicated Māori Services team, Rōpū Ratonga Māori. The service was welcomed by Māori in the University and also impacted favourably on the Library's ability to attract Māori as library staff members. Pasifika service provision, incorporated into the Māori Services team was investigated in 2003. By February 2005, the first Pasifika Liaison Librarian, of Pasifika heritage was welcomed into the Māori Services team and the team's philosophy and services were extended to include those of and to the Pasifika University community.

Māori and Pasifika Services, under the direction of the Library Manager, Māori and Pasifika Services, is delivered by three main groups:

  • the Māori and Pasifika Information Services team;
  • Te Ropu Kaimahi Māori (Māori Library Staff Group); and
  • Pasifika Library Staff Group (lead by the Pasifika Liaison Librarian)
Most of the services to the Māori and Pasifika University communities are delivered by the Māori and Pasifika Information Services team. This team manages the Matauranga Māori Collection and advises on the development of the Pasifika content of the New Zealand and Pacific Collection located in the General Library. The team's main aim is to deliver information services, with excellence, to the Māori and Pasifika staff and students of the university of Auckland through the principles of whanaungatanga, aroha, tautua, ta'aaloalo and alofa. For more information about the team's location, services and hours please click here.

Te Pou Rāhui (Māori Library Staff Group), currently lead by the Library Manager, Māori and Pasifika Services, draws its members from a wide range of units within the Library system. The main aim of the group is to nurture and empower Māori students and staff in a whānau environment which is friendly to Māori cultural and personal values through the principles of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, wairuatanga, kaitiakitanga, kotahitanga, tino rangatiratanga and ngākau mahaki.  The group also acts as an advisory body (in consultation with the University Committee - Runanga, where appropriate) to the University Librarian regarding Treaty of Waitangi issues that affect the University Library's procedures and policies.

The Pasifika Library Staff Group was established in 2005, and its members come from within the Library system and University wide. The main aim of the group, like Te Pou Rāhui (Māori Library Staff Group),is to nurture and empower Pasifika students and staff in a tertiary environment which respects the cultural differences in Pasifika, and is friendly to Pasifika cultural and personal values, through the principles of tautua, alofa and fa’aaloalo (service, love and respect).The group is also a supportive and information network for members to enhance and advance their work with Pasifika communities of the University.
