Why use reference books?

Reference books are usually written by experts in the subject or discipline in which they specialise, and aim to provide impartial, factual, and concise information. They are authoritative, meet the academic standard required, and can be cited in your list of references or your bibliography. Depending on their type and size, they offer brief, encyclopedic-type entries, or extended essays on a topic that trace its development and current state of scholarship. Often they provide a list of further key reading, and cross-reference you to other entries.

Reference books have a number of roles in the research process. They are good sources for starting to research a topic, but also useful for checking facts, definitions, terminology, or background material at any stage during research and also to clarify elusive points that you come across in your own reading.

Reference books are described in various ways. Some are dictionaries or encyclopedias that specialise in a particular subject. Others may be called guides, handbooks, companions, or reference guides. Some deal exclusively with an individual author or literary work. They may be in print, online [e-books], or both. Some are in reference collections, others in the main collections but designated NOT TO BE BORROWED.

The reference books listed below are a selection of reference sources available at the University of Auckland Library.  The titles are cited according to MLA style. Call numbers and locations are given for each book. If a book is available online [e-book], you must be logged on with your Net ID and Net Password to access the e-book by clicking the title. Books that are available in both print and online have a call number and location in addition to the link in the title. Some have a link to the Tables of Contents.

This list is not an exhaustive list. Use a Guided Keyword or Subject Heading search in Voyager, to find other reference books.

Topic categories attempt to group books according to their most defining aspect, so region or nationality is subsumed under the wider scope of the book. Books under the Literary Period heading are those where the overall content is general, and the literary period is the main focus. However, all books dealing with women in the literary field are listed under the Women heading, irrespective of other content. The topic categories are a pragmatic attempt to represent the reference books that are available.
