Who may borrow?

  • Staff, students and others officially associated with the University of Auckland
    A current University of Auckland ID card is required for all borrowing. To obtain your ID card after enrolment or the start of your employment contract visit the Epsom Contact Centre.
  • Teacher Associate Members of the Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library
    Membership of the University Library may be granted to practising teachers or administrators employed as permanent employees of early childhood centres, primary, intermediate and secondary schools in the Auckland and Northland Regions, and home-schoolers in the Auckland and Northland Regions approved by the Ministry of Education.

Locating & obtaining material

Epsom material *
When you locate Epsom material on The Catalogue, which is not on the shelf but on loan you may recall it yourself via The Catalogue or ask staff to place a hold for you. You can choose where you would like to pick up the item and you will be notified by email when it is available for collection.

Material at other University of Auckland campuses
If you want an available item from another campus select the title on The Catalogue and use the 'Intercampus delivery' option from the Intercampus/Recall tab to place your request.

Material from outside the University of Auckland
Staff and students may obtain items the library does not hold by using the Interlibrary loan service.

* Note that at Epsom kits, videos, CD-ROMs and DVDs are shelved with the books.  Periodicals are shelved together on Floor 1, adjacent to the Atrium.  Cassette tapes are shelved together on Floor 1.

Loan periods

All material except Short loan and Stack items:
  • Staff and graduate students - 60 days
  • Undergraduates - 28 days
  • Teacher Associate Members - 28 days

7 Day loan items: may not be renewed and must be returned to the Epsom Campus Library.

The following items are not for loan at Epsom except by special arrangement

  • Theses

Note: Faculty of Education students working off-campus on practicum are not granted extended borrowing privileges.

Returning and renewing items

Material borrowed from the Library must be returned or renewed by the due date displayed on your issue docket. If you receive a recall notice for an item you have on loan the notice will display a new due date. Fines will be charged for late returns, $3 a day for late return of recalled items.

Returning items at Epsom

  • You can return items from any other University of Auckland library to the Epsom Campus Library.
  • Epsom overnight Short Loan, oversize and recalled items should be returned directly to the Lending desk; other items should be put through the returns slot by the entrance.

Renewing items

  • All 28 and 60 day loans may be renewed, unless the item has been requested by another borrower.
  • Undergraduate, New Start and Foundation Studies students: Maximum of 1 renewal of 28 days for each item.
  • Honours, graduate, PhD students, and staff: Maximum of 2 renewals of 60 days each time.
  • 28 and 60 day loans may be renewed:
    • on The Catalogue http://www.library.auckland.ac.nz/catalogueClick on the ‘Patron’ button. Please confirm your renewals are successful by scrolling through your list of items on loan and checking the new due date. If you are unable to renew your books on The Catalogue, please enquire at a Lending Desk.
    • at the Lending Desk of any University of Auckland Library except at the Short Loan Desk in the Kate Edger Information Commons.
  • We do not provide renewals by phone or email.

Fines for late return of material

The Library charges fines for the late return of any material. It is your responsibility to return material on time. The Library is under no obligation to notify you when items are overdue. Even if you have not received a notice a fine will be charged when the items are returned after the date on the issue docket or the recall notice.

Overdue items 25c per day
Lost books Replacement cost, plus overdue fine, recall fine (where applicable) and administration fee
Overdue items recalled for other users and 7 day loans $3 per day
Short Loan items 5c per minute

Short Loan Collection

The Short Loan Collection contains items such as prescribed texts which are in high demand and are required by a large number of students, usually within a limited period of time.

  • To borrow you must have your ID card. No ID card = no borrowing
  • Please provide Lending desk staff with the call number of the item you wish to borrow
  • Short Loan items are issued for 2 hours and are Library only
  • Overnight loans: items are available for overnight loan from 1 hour before closing. They must be returned within half an hour of opening the next working day
  • Fines for overdue items: Overdue items are charged at 5c per minute (or $3.00 per hour). To avoid fines, return your items on time or renew them. You may self-renew on your record accessed via ‘Patron’ on The Catalogue.
Please note Epsom Short Loan items may not be reserved on line.

Self-check

At Epsom borrowers may choose to charge items themselves at the self-check unit in the Atrium.

Periodicals

Periodicals are found on Floor 1. They are not available for loan.

Theses

Theses held at the Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library, Epsom can be requested from the Lending Desk, and are in most instances for use in the Library only.  Where there is more than 1 copy of a thesis, the second copy may be borrowable.

Stack

Stack items are stored in the library basement. Staff will retrieve items on request. Items are available for use in the Library only.

Photocopying

You use your staff or student ID card on the Ricoh photocopiers in the Library.

Remember you are subject to prevailing Copyright legislation.
