  • New Zealand Time Series is a collection of statistical information in electronic form largely from the Statistics New Zealand database INFOS. The database also includes some series from the Reserve Bank and from Treasury and replaces PCINfos
NOVEMBER  ' 9 9
  • We currently have a 2 week trial (25/11/99 -- 8/12/99) of the full-text database IEL Electronic Library which contains ALL IEEE and IEE publications, including 
    journal articles, conference papers, and technical standards from 1988 to the present. Send us your feedback on this resource as soon as possible!
  • ScienceDirect titles are now available via Voyager the library catalogue. Each title to which we have fulltext access has been catalogued on Voyager with links which provide direct access to the title in ScienceDirect.
  • SilverPlatter has taken over the database Philosopher's Index. This means Philosopher's Index is now available campus wide with the same search interface as MLA, Index New Zealand and many other library databases.

  • There is now a direct link to Index New Zealand on Te Puna via LEARN.
  • A New Books listing for the Library is now available. Access is from the first Voyager page. Over the next few days we will add links from the Divisional and General Library home pages. The results can be sorted by Call No., Author or Title.

  • The library conducted an electronic survey on client perception.
  • Te Puna - the NZ National Bibliographic database is now available on LEARN for all members of the University. 
  • SciFinder Scholar: a trial version of this product is now available for downloading onto your PC or Mac. Computers in the Science, Biological Science and Philson libraries also have the software loaded for trialling. SciFinder Scholar is produced by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS). It includes over 14 million journal articles, patents and other documents and more than 20 million substance records in the CAS Chemical Registry database. CAS covers biochemistry & biotechnology (32%), macromolecular (10%), organic (10%), applied (20%) and physical/inorganic/analytical chemistry (27%).

  • Now available on LEARN, the CDROM Glossary of Geology Third Edition is produced by the American Geological Institute. It incorporates the modifications and growth of the geoscience vocabulary since 1972. Coverage has been expanded and updated, particularly in such active fields as biostratigraphy, caves and karst, igneous petrology, paleomagnetism, remote sensing, plate tectonics, and seismic stratigraphy. 
  • Journals @ OVID : The Library has purchased 11 fulltext electronic journals with a 4 user licence. They are Cancer Nursing, Computers in Nursing, Image:Journal of Nursing Scholarship, JOGNN: Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing, JONA: Journal of Nursing Administration, Journal of Emergency Nursing, Journal of Nursing Management, Nurse Educator, Nursing research, Journal of Advanced Nursing and Journal of Clinical Nursing. Access is via the Medical and Health Sciences Electronic Journals page and the Journals @ Ovid page. Links will also be made from Voyager records.

  • The Library is about to launch an Electronic Information Desk service at the start of Semester 2, which has been named "Ask a Librarian". This service is accessible from the front page of LEARN and via our electronic forms page.
  • The recent Voyager upgrade has the following features patron self-renewal (renew your books online yourself) and the addition of a search history for your session.
  • The Statistical Sources for New Zealand Information pages are now up on LEARN. They are an excellent secondary source which organise the primary NZ statistical sources, both print (includes call numbers), and electronic (includes internet sites) by  topic. Anne Wilson in the NZ & Pacific Department both compiled the information and authored the pages.

  • From the start of Semester 2, Monday 19 July, the General Library will be opening its doors at 8.00 am Monday to Friday, instead of 8.30 am. The earlier opening time will also apply to the mid-semester break (6 - 17 September). Services that will be open for business from 8.00 am are the Loans desk, Floor 1, and the Short Loans desk, Ground Floor.
  • The Voyager component of the Electronic Serials Initiative is ready for evaluation. The first database which is available from Voyager for electronic delivery is ABI/Inform ProQuest Direct. So far we have entered the URL links for over 600 titles from this Database. Check out Fortune magazine using a Journal Title search, limited to the LEARN location, and follow through the Linked Resources to see the fulltext delivery.

  • OFFSTATS: Official Statistics on the Web : Created by International Commerce & Statistics Librarian Rainer Wolcke here at the University of Auckland Library, OFFSTATS: Official Statistics on the Web offers "free and easily accessible social, economic and general data from official sources." - excerpt from Scout Report....
  • We now have the ability to dynamically search Voyager for journals from an Ovid citation database. Search any Ovid database using the web client [Connect Campus] button. Choose [Complete Reference]and you should see a hypertext link [Check Local Holdings Search Voyager Now] which launches a Voyager search in a new browser window. This is at the trial stage so please send us your feedback. 
  • The updated 'Guide to the Presentation of Theses' is now available on LEARN. It can be accessed via the Instructional Services page or the Libraries & Collections page under Guides.

  • Environment Abstracts is now available on LEARN. This is a CDRom product from Congressional Information Services, available only in the libraries and contains bibliographic records for journal articles, papers and reports containing information on all aspects of the impact of humankind and  technology on the environment.
  • Forensic Science Abstracts is  a multidisciplinary database and covers literature relevant to the examination of evidential materials, analytical methods & the presentation and interpretation of findings. This database uses SilverPlatter search software and is produced by the Forensic Science Service in the UK.
  • Webspirs 4.1 is now loaded on our server for trialling. Please try some searches in this new interface and send your feedback . New features include automatic linking to local holdings: you can click a button from any record to do an ISSN/ISBN search of Voyager and also SDIs and AutoAlerts.

  • In the last few weeks we've done a minor redesign of the Library's webpages. We've amalgamated the Virtual Reading Room (gone) and the Internet Gateway. Internet sites that are available in the Library are now indicated with a tick.gif (849 bytes). You'll also notice that some of the databases have a $.gif (851 bytes) sign beside them this indicates that there are Internet traffic charges associated with that database if you are accessing it outside the Library. These are databases that we source overseas or elsewhere in New Zealand (ie. they are not maintained locally within the University domain).

  • The Library has implemented changes to Fines and Loan periods (with implications for both University staff and students).
  • Historical Abstracts database: Historical coverage of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada). In addition to articles, each year Historical Abstracts includes approximately 3,000 citations to useful historical books as reviewed by the most prestigious journals in the field and citations to abstracts of dissertations. 
  • The Engineering Information Village brings you over 16,000 selected, organized and monitored Web sites; desktop access to technical databases and engineering libraries; weekly reports on engineering topics; and Ei CompendexWeb, and much more. Replaces access to Compendex.

  • The Library has a trial of Elsevier's Science Direct till the end of March. This is a substantial collection of fulltext journals, primarily in the Science area although there are overlaps with Commerce, Engineering Medicine and Social Sciences..
  • Academics can use an electronic form to request items to be temporarily withdrawn from the Library shelves since it is in high demand for essay writing and assignments. From the forms link on LEARN, choose Short Loan Electronic Form.
  • Instructional Services now have timetable information available for 1999 tutorials as well as a Virtual Tour, an introduction to Information Services and Instructional Services.
  • New databases in the medical field include Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Best Evidence, Cinahl (all Ovid databases). INSPEC is produced by the Institute of Electrical Engineers and is another new Ovid database; and World Development Indicators 1998 is a database of 526 timeseries indicators for 227 countries.
