Login changes
13 December 2011

From 13th December 2011, you will need to login with NetID and password to access Library Resources from computers on-campus.

The Library has changed its authentication rules so that all staff and students are required to login with their NetID and password to access Library resources from on-campus. (Previously, this was necessary only for off-campus access). Authentication security has been set to Level 0. University staff only need to login once every 30 days if they tick “Remember me” on the login screen. Students using computers in the Library, Information Commons and Labs are required to login once for every browser session.

Why are we making this change?
In recent years an increasing number of visitors and co-locators (who are not University staff or students) have been connected to the University network for a variety of reasons. Their computers are allocated a University of Auckland IP address and so they automatically have access to the Library’s databases, e-journals and e-books, which contravenes our licences. We need to ensure that only University staff and students have access to the Library’s electronic resources.

For any comments or questions please contact Library Digital Services staff digital.services@auckland.ac.nz

Thanks for your feedback on the Library survey
09 November 2011

The results showed that the most important areas are provision of relevant online resources, wireless access and approachable staff.

We were pleased to see that the service provided by Library and Information Commons staff was given the highest score of 85% and that provision of information resources was also above 80%. The provision of online information resources was given a score higher than any other Australasian university participating in the survey.

The service that received the lowest performance score was availability of a computer when needed.

Overall your feedback gave us a rating of 5.64 out of 7 (80%) and an improvement on the score of 5.53 received in 2009.

Kenneth Cumberland & John Morton Exhibitions
30 May 2011

For three weeks beginning on May 23rd there will be an exhibition on Level G of the General Library concerning the late Professor John Morton (Biological Sciences) and the late Kenneth Cumberland (Geography).

Kenneth B. Cumberland was the long serving Head of Department (1946-1978) for Geography at the University. Throughout his career he emphasised the importance of land management. An obituary appeared in the News section of the University website in April.

John Morton was the founding Chair in Zoology (1960-1989) and helped support the development of the Leigh Marine Laboratory. His book The New Zealand Sea Shore, (first edition published 1968; second edition 1973) co-authored with now retired Associate Professor Michael Miller, remains a standard text on the subject.

Both academics were interested in communicating their fields of study to a general audience. Morton wrote and presented part of the natural science television series "Our World" and Cumberland wrote and presented the 10-part documentary series "Landmarks". The first part of "Landmarks" is being shown (without audio) as part of the display. This can be viewed, with sound at nzonscreen.com

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, The University of Auckland Library presents a display of aspects of Emeritus Professor Nicholas Tarling's academic achievements, including his contribution to the study of history, especially the history of Southeast Asia. He is the author of over 40 books on politics, history, education, student welfare and the arts. To mark his 80th birthday he will publish his second volume of memoirs Eighty years on.

Nicholas Tarling earned his PhD at Cambridge and in 1957 he took up a teaching post at The University of Queensland, in the Department of History and Political Science. In 1965 he was appointed Associate Professor of History at The University of Auckland. For much of his time, until his retirement in 1997, he was also Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Assistant or Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He was awarded the Cambridge Litt.D in 1974 and given an honorary Litt. D by The University of Auckland in 1996. He is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

He has written, acted and directed in over 140 plays since. As part of the Auckland University Theatre Company, he produced and played the part of Baptista Minola of Padua (father of Katherine and Bianca) in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew in 1968. He frequently acted in or directed the University's revues and outdoor Shakespeare productions.

He served on the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council and the boards of Auckland's Mercury Theatre and of Auckland Opera. As well as some Mercury Theatre roles, he also played at the Devonport Theatre Company's Victoria Theatre, The Howick Little Theatre, The New Independent Theatre, Central Theatre, Remuera Players and The Pumphouse in Takapuna.

Nicholas Tarling was a regular commentator and broadcast the weekly Opera Hour on the Concert Programme between 1975 and 1991. He is a reviewer for several leading opera journals. He continues to conduct opera tours to Australia and around the world. Nicholas will be presenting a seminar on Handel's comic opera, Xerxes, on Saturday 26 February 2011. The opera will be performed in Auckland 2-6 March 2011 at the Civic Theatre in Auckland.

Happy 80th Birthday Nicholas!

Important update on Library Search
20 January 2011

Thanks to everyone who has given feedback on our new discovery service. The common theme is that the much larger dataset makes our local content less easily accessible. A decision has therefore been made to have a third tab option, "the Catalogue", within the new Library Search software. This additional functionality should be available from early February.

Tell us what you think about the new Library website design
11 January 2011

As part of the redevelopment of the Library and IC websites in 2011, you are invited to take a few minutes to complete a usability test based on a wireframe of our new site. Your participation is completely anonymous, and you are welcome to provide specific feedback at the end of the test.

Update: Usability testing has now been completed.
