    A searchable online database from the British Standards Institution providing access to the entire set of current British standards- over 55,000 documents.
  • Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an
    An encyclopaedic dictionary of qur'anic terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history and exegesis. It includes essays on important themes and subjects within qur'anic studies, and provides access to a range of early western printed Qur'ans. The Encyclopaedia is accompanied by a Qur'an concordance.
  • The March of Time
    A searchable online video collection from Alexander Street Press providing over 800 short films from the newsreel series The March of Time, produced by Time Inc. Part journalism, part propaganda, the original series was screened in cinemas in the United States (and elsewhere) from 1935 to 1951.
  • RISS International
    RISS International is a searchable online database covering over 1.2 million Korean journal articles and academic dissertations, many in full-text. It incorporates a wide range of primary resources on Korean history, and provides access to the KERIS union catalogue of Korean university libraries.

Philson Library closed Sat 28 April

  • The Philson Library will be closed on Sat 28 April to move into their renovated premises.

  • There may be some service restrictions from Sun 29 April until Tue 2 May, while staff re-commission equipment and settle into new locations.

Wireless upgrade tonight
03 April 2012

Between 10pm Tuesday 3 April and 6am Wednesday 4 April, the University wireless network will be unavailable due to an IT Services upgrade. Wireless access will continue within the Kate Edger Information Commons until closing time at 12midnight tonight.

File storage - Maintenance

Between 8:30pm Saturday 31st March and 8:00am Sunday 1st April, IT Services are applying an upgrade to the student file storage. Students can still use their home drives during this period but may notice 1-2 minute outages at approximately 10pm, 11 pm, 1am and 2am.

  • Encyclopedia of Ocean Sciences (2nd edition)
    A searchable online encyclopaedia on the ScienceDirect platform, covering the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of ocean science. Comprising over 400 articles, the second (2009) edition is a completely revised version of the original work published in 2001.
  • The Irish Times
    A searchable full-image archive providing the entire historical run of the Irish Times and its predecessor, the Irish times and daily advertiser, on the ProQuest Historical Newspapers platform. Coverage is currently from 1859 through 2010.
  • MDConsult
    AN online clinical information service designed to meet the information needs of primary care physicians and specialists. It incorporates around 50 medical texts, over medical journals, and some of the Clinics series published by Elsevier.
  • Oxford Encyclopedia of the Books of the Bible
    A searchable online encyclopaedia from Oxford University Press focusing on each of the canonical books of the Bible, major apocryphal books of the New and Old Testaments, and important non-canonical texts. It also includes thematic essays on topics such as canonicity, textual criticism, and translation.
  • PsycTHERAPY
    A searchable online video collection of psychotherapy demonstrations from the American Psychological Association, showing leading practitioners in North America working with participants on a wide range of therapeutic topics.

  • ADIS International Journal Archive
    The Library’s collection of medical journals from ADIS International was enhanced with package of archival issues on the OVID platform. The archive covers over 40 titles (3,600 issues) and provides a back-file from the first volume for many of the publications. Titles include the American Journal of Cancer, Clinical drug investigation, Drugs and Sports Medicine.     
  • Anthropology Online
    An extensive online collection of books, field notes and other printed material on human behaviour, Anthropology Online is cross-searchable with Ethnographic Video Online.
  • Classical Scores Library II
    An online collection of around 25,000 classical music scores provided by Alexander Street Press. A second fully integrated module has now been licensed, substantially increasing the number of composers and works offered. 
  • Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering
    A searchable online encyclopaedia on the Wiley platform, offering original contributions from expert authors in the fields of engineering science that support the study and development of aerospace technology and vehicle design.
  • Encyclopedia of Ancient History
    A searchable online encyclopaedia on the Wiley platform, focusing on the entire ancient Mediterranean world. Currently a work in progress, it is scheduled for completion late 2012.
  • Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics
    A searchable online encyclopaedia on the ScienceDirect platform, covering all areas of applied ethics, including bioethics, environmental ethics, information and computer ethics, legal, business, and medical ethics. The second (2011) edition extends and updates the original edition of 1998, with many newly commissioned articles.
  • Encyclopedia of Climate and Weather
    A searchable online version of the 2nd (2011) edition of a major reference work from Oxford University Press. The new edition has a strong focus on global warming and associated topics.
  • Supplement to Brill’s New Pauly
    The online version of Brill’s New Pauly, an encyclopaedia of the ancient world, has been enhanced with a searchable four volume supplement in English, covering chronologies, a dictionary of Greek and Latin authors and texts, an historical atlas, and a volume on the reception of myth and mythology.

Welcome to our combined Library and Information Commons site.

Our rewritten Services and About Us sections support the broad range of tasks our Library and Information Commons’ users require from our site.

The Ebooks and Bindery pages are promoted to the homepage and a new Referencing page has been added.

A new navigation banner has been rolled out across the site. These changes are part of a wider redesign programme incorporating a content management system.

More information is available on Our website page. We welcome your feedback on these changes.

Student File Storage Upgrade
13 February 2012

ITS will be upgrading the file storage system over the weekend of 18th/19th February 2012.

All existing files will be transferred to the new system during the weekend, so direct access to file storage via the IC Home drive (EC Home, H:/ drive) will not be available over the weekend.

Students wishing to access their files over the weekend will need to do so using the Web interface: http://afsweb.ec.auckland.ac.nz
When complete, the upgrade will provide students with 2GB of personal storage, previously this was 250MB!

From Monday 20 Feb 2012 Students will be able to access their files in the same way as they’ve always done, so there will be minimal disruption for students once the upgrade is completed.

All the Information Commons Helpdesks provide student support for file storage.

The films blend actual newsreel footage with staged scenes using professional and amateur actors, and in some cases celebrities were persuaded to reenact events in which they had participated.     A citation index on the Web of Knowledge platform covering 1,200 science and engineering journals published in the People's Republic of China. Much of the bibliographic informaton is available in both English and Chinese (Simplified). Fully integrated into the Web of Knowledge, the Chinese Science Citation Database can be searched in conjunction with SCI. The CSCD is published by Thomson Reuters in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The database currently contains almost 2 million records and around 200,000 citations are added each year.

  • Visual Man

    Visual Man contains over 1800 cross-section images of a male body, which are taken from the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Visible Human Project. To obtain these images, the body of an executed murderer was embedded in gelatin, sliced crosswise into more than 1800 millimeter slices, then digitally photographed - resulting in 15 gigabytes of data. These images were then converted to 24-bit JPEG format to fit onto a single CD-ROM. The Windows interface that runs direct from the CD-ROM allows exploration of the body and viewing of the various cross-sections.
