Interpreting References

Bibliographies and reading lists usually include a variety of types of publications, including monographs (books), chapters from books, papers from conference proceedings and journal articles. It is important to be able to distinguish between different types of publications when trying to locate them in the library.

What follows are examples of different types of publications, with notes on how to locate them in the library system.

Books | Chapters in Books | Papers from Conference Proceedings | Journal Articles | Summary

BOOKS

Example :  Bryman, A. (2008). Social research methods. Oxford, New York: Oxford University Press.

The reference consists of one author (Bryman), the date of publication (2008), the title of the book (Social research methods), the place of publication (Oxford, New York) and the name of the publisher of the book (Oxford University Press).

To locate this reference:

Search the library Catalogue, entering the author’s name Bryman A and the book title social research methods.

Example : Hillis, D. M., Moritz, C., Mable B. K. (Eds.). (1996). Molecular systematics. Sunderland, Mass.: Sinauer Associates.

The reference is slightly different from the one above, in that it has three editors, rather than one author. This indicates that three people have edited a volume of papers written by a number of different authors

To locate this reference:

Search the library Catalogue by typing in all three editors' names Hills Moritz Mable and the book title molecular systematics.
