ENDNOTE - Bibliography Management Software

Support for versions X2 and X1in 2009

EndNote X2 was released mid-2008 and a subsequent patch (X2.0.1) was released in late October. Due to the reasons listed below Library and Student Learning Centre staff have decided not to adopt EndNote X2 in 2009. Library and Student Learning Centre staff will continue to teach and support EndNote X1.0.1 and this will remain the version available on all Library and Information Commons computers.

The staff in the Library and Student Learning Centre, are satisfied that the current version (X1.0.1) works successfully with Windows XP, Vista, Word 2003, 2007 and 2008 (for Macs – since the release of a patch).

Although EndNote X2 introduces some improvements and useful new features there is nothing that makes it essential to upgrade to the new version. Some of the new features raise issues that require further investigation before being introduced across the University, eg:

  • X2 users have to choose between one of three modes to work in. The choice is not intuitive but is particularly important if users want to be able to indicate specific records to transfer from databases to an EndNote library.
  • One feature of X2 is the ability of EndNote to locate, download and attach the full text of a journal article to a record in an EndNote library. This feature is prefaced by a caution message that indicates that using this process may breech copyright restrictions depending on the source of the full text file. Further investigation is required to determine how likely this is.

The late release of the patch meant that there was not sufficient time to follow up on these issues in time to be included on computers at the University for 2009
