The University of Auckland Library is integral to the teaching, learning and research within the University. It consists of multiple libraries on the City, Grafton, Tamaki and Epsom and Tai Tokerau campuses. The Library offers readers with physical and learning disabilities specific assistance in the use of the Library.

Special technology for the visually impaired is available in the General Library, the Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library at Epsom, the Kate Edger Information Commons, and the Davis Law Library.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

The University of Auckland Library's website provides access to detailed information about services and resources, and links to a large number of databases, full-text electronic journals and electronic books. Most electronic resources are accessible at your desktop.

Voyager, the Library's catalogue, is accessible from the Library homepage and identifies all material held in The University Library. Voyager records for electronic journals and books link directly to full-text where available.


LIBRARY SERVICES
Information and Enquiries

Staff will assist you, by phone or in person, by:

  • answering general enquiries
  • facilitating your use of Voyager
  • assisting with searching the Library website
  • helping you check for material on your reading lists
  • checking and searching bibliographic sources, indexes and other reference books for specific information
  • reading a word or call number
  • providing concise written or verbal direction to assist in locating material in the library
  • telephoning other libraries to check if a book or journal is available
  • providing an orientation tour

Lending Services

Lending Services staff will assist you, by phone or in person, by:

  • issuing and renewing material
  • checking for availability of and retrieving material from the shelves. In the General Library if a disabled student has a request for more than two items to be retrieved, they should normally make an appointment with the student Disability Service for assistance
  • placing reserves and recalls
  • accepting phone enquiries as to whether a book is on the shelf
  • assisting with applications for the Intercampus Library Delivery Service.

Proxy borrowing is available to patrons with physical disabilities. This service enables you to authorise another registered Library member to act on your behalf for borrowing and renewing Library items at a Lending Services desk. A proxy patron is unable to use the lending self-service facilities in Voyager to recall or renew books. The proxy application form is available from Elizabeth McKenzie, Lending Services Manager, eh.mckenzie@auckland.ac.nz or from any Lending Services desk.

Short Loan Collections

There are short loan collections in the Kate Edger Information Commons (Arts, Science, Business & Economics and Theology material), and in the Architecture, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Law, Medical and Health Sciences, Music & Dance and Tamaki Libraries.

Staff will assist you, by phone or in person, by:

  • taking phone bookings for Short Loan items up to a day in advance
  • renewing or reserving items over the telephone
  • checking to see whether a particular item is held in Short Loan

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

Staff will assist you, by phone or in person, by

  • assisting with applications for interlibrary loans from other libraries in New Zealand and overseas.
    Information on the VDX Interlibrary Loan Requesting Service can be accessed via the Interlibrary Loan (VDX) Request link on the Library website (www.library.auckland.ac.nz/forms/docdel/interloans/), or from the Interlibrary Loan (VDX) button on Voyager.
  • Retrieving items from other libraries on other campuses in The University of Auckland library system through the Intercampus Library Delivery Service. Information about the service is available on the Library website at www.library.auckland.ac.nz/forms/docdel/iclds/ or you can access the service itself by using the Recall/Intercampus button on Voyager.

Learning Services

Learning Services librarians offer individual or small group instruction on effective use of Library resources such as the Voyager online catalogue, databases, e-books and e-journals.

Maori & Pasifika Services and Matauranga Maori

Information requests should be directed to the Maori & Pasifika Services Team, on Level G of the General Library, where the Maori research collection, Matauranga Maori, is also located. Contact the Maori & Pasifika Services Team Ph 373 7599 ext. 87138 or ext. 82881.

Services to Graduate Students and Staff

Subject librarians offer staff and graduate students:

- Personal consultations regarding their information needs
- Subject-focused tutorials and seminars on information resources
- Contact details for all Subject Librarians can be found at Contacts on the Library homepage; select Subject Librarian and then select a subject or a department.


DISABILITIES SERVICES

Retrieving books - The Disabilities Services Co-ordinators provide assistance with searching for and retrieving books from the shelves, fetching, carrying and lifting books, photocopying and assistance for visually impaired students. Please ring Disabilities Services for an appointment.

Parking on Campus - Students with an Operation Mobility card from CCS may be eligible for parking on campus. Please contact the Disability Co-ordinators for more information.
